It doesn’t matter if the glass is half-full or half empty. It matters that you know how to refill it. 

So this is an interesting one because it isn’t related to how you are looking at what is happening in your life right now. Your world can be going great, your situation can be awful or maybe life is just meh. A very important part is that no matter how things are going in your life you know where and how to find a way that will help you. This is really about making sure that you take care of your needs. 

We can get caught up in life and what is happening around us or taking care of other people and forget that we have needs. We forget where we hid those magical bottles of elixir that help us refill our glass and bring us happiness, peace, calm, a sense of achievement, whichever and however the glass needs to be refilled at that time.

 

How do we make sure we know how to refill our glass? 

1. Which glass needs to be filled?

We have different areas (or glasses in the case of this metaphor) of our lives that we need to take into consideration: family work, social, and health to name some of them. The first step is knowing which of our glasses is running low. Which area of life feels draining? Which areas are bringing joy? When a glass needs to be filled it is going to feel like that area is totally overwhelming to us. 

 

  1. How to fill each glass

Since we have different glasses that need to get filled we need to have different elixirs that fill them. What might refill the family glass may not be able to fill the work glass. Yet, sometimes what fills one cup may pour over into another cup. For example, maybe work is really overwhelming you right now and you need to take a step back. You spend some quality time with family. That fills both your family and work glasses. 

 

It may be a matter of trial and error of what you need to do to fill certain glasses. It is more than okay to play around with different ways to fill your cups. There is a lot of information about things to do for self-care out there. Some of them will work for you and others won’t. Be open to giving different activities a try. Also, make sure you have a list of the ways that you have used to fill your glasses and how much (or little) they supported your refill.

 

  1. Understand that filling glasses is self-less

Contrary to physics, in mental health, the fuller the glass the lighter it is to carry. Meaning that when we take care of ourselves, we are better able to function in the world. It is imperative that we take the time to fill our glasses. It doesn’t have to be an all day thing, it can be 5 minutes here or there. But if we aren’t filling our glasses then we will be sitting around in a room full of empty glasses that are begging for our attention.
