So what’s the secret? It may have to do with the fact that affirmations help to rewire our brain for positivity. According to psychologist Carol Dweck, when we repeat affirmations, we “send a positive message to [our] brain, which changes [our] brain chemistry just like [we] change [our] body chemistry with exercise.” In other words, morning affirmations may not magically solve all our problems, but they can help us to think and feel better on a day-to-day basis. And that’s definitely something worth repeating.

I have also heard a number of people say that positive affirmations don’t work for them. And I believe that. One of the problems when we use affirmations is that we don’t actually believe them. We state the affirmation and then our mind goes, “Hold up there you big liar! You are not [insert whatever adjective here].” When we use positive affirmations our mind needs to get behind them and believe that they are true or at least possible. What we need to do is lessen that distance between where we are and what we are using the morning affirmations to move us toward.

This can be easily done by replacing the “I am” portion of an affirmation with a start that focuses more on progress. For example, instead of the affirmation of “I am enough” we can use the affirmation of “I am working on believing I am enough”. In this case our mind would go, “Oh yeah, that is true. You are working on that.” and happily believe you. Then as you get closer to actually believing you are enough you can use the “I am enough” affirmation.

Some other alternatives to “I am” – “I’m trying”, “I’m starting to”, “I’m moving toward” or come up with your own.
